When METRO contacted us about translating their freshly-designed magazine to the iPad, we set out to do more than digitize their monthly print issue. We created a Twin Cities handbook by incorporating a regularly-refreshing restaurant guide, event listings and reviews, daily blog posts, and great articles to pull it all together.

View in the App Store

While other tablet publications tout their interactivity, many are simple PDF readers – losing the iPad’s ability to zoom, scroll and select text. Each month we lovingly recreated articles with HTML 5, CSS 3 and JavaScript. The result? Better performance, live typography, Webkit animations, and accessibility that static pages can’t offer.

We fused METRO’s regularly-updated web content with their rich print content, resulting in an experience that, unlike other digital publications, remained fresh every day.

METRO’s restaurant guide contained an extensive list of Twin Cities locations – each categorized by neighborhood and cuisine. Related articles from the magazine were displayed when a restaurant was selected, encouraging users to purchase past issues.

After being bookmarked, an icon representing a restaurant’s cuisine type was displayed next to its name on the dashboard. Fancy.

Equal Exchange came to us with a problem: the best small farmers and producers from around the country weren’t receiving proper recognition for their commitment to strong, local economies, fair trade and organic food. We gave co-op members a forum to speak about their favorite – and least favorite – food and food producers, with the best products receiving proper acknowledgement monthly.

Over six thousand products, farms and producers were up for discussion, with users having the ability to voice their opinions for each. Well-liked products entered the P6 Hall of Fame, with the most vocal users receiving recognition along with its enshrinement.

User participation was tracked in detail, with a complete list of products they liked and didn’t like, past comments, and even a number of accomplishments users could earn by contributing to product and location pages.

In order to make it easy for shoppers to quickly look up food while in-store, we designed a mobile-optimized version of Principle Six. While the mobile edition contained much of the same content as the full site, we emphasized quick access to product ratings and reviews, rather than discussion and participation.

Voltage Fashion Amplified is a rock-meets-fashion show held annually at First Avenue in Minneapolis. 2011 saught to visually embrace the show’s roots as a counterculture rock show, so I did that in a way any designer would – gig posters.

Each poster was a clinic in web fonts, SVG imagery, and plenty of CSS3 tricks to create a rich experience without resorting to Flash.

Resizeable SVG images and webfonts – combined with Modernizr-supported Javascript and percentage-based CSS3 – allowed for the site to crisply scale to the browser or device size, ensuring a readable and immersive experience independent
of resolution.

Pabst Blue Ribbon has embraced their rough-around-the-edges likability among plaid-clad twenty-somethings. Their marketing efforts live through representatives throughout the country – beer-carrying Johnny Appleseeds whose mission is to ensure everyone is holding a PBR while enjoying themselves.

We designed a number of tools and outlets for these representatives – including the PBR home page – that allow them to get the word out about any event where an endless cascade of PBR will be available.

The Pabst locator is a database of thousands of bars, restaurants and liquor stores who carry PBR across the country. We extended the tool to be used with other Pabst brands, such as Schlitz.

While NBA teams require templatized home pages, restrictions on secondary pages are relaxed. We designed modules for the Wolves’ player and dancer line-ups.

Wolves Nation is the online hub for Timberwolves fans to discuss the team. We coordinated Ustream sessions with team representatives for fans to ask questions during events – such as the NBA draft. When live chats weren’t occurring, fans could post their thoughts about current news, read players’ Twitter and Facebook feeds, and view Wolves-related photos and videos.

Scion doesn’t just manufacture motorized, rideable bread boxes – they help raise up to $30,000 yearly for artists and arts non-profits across the United States through their Scion x-CHANGE tour. Each tour stops in thirty states, where the Scion team sells local artists’ work, offers test drives of their latest art-adorned cars, and manages stations where visitors can create their own artwork.

The Scion x-CHANGE site gave visitors an opportunity to upload their favorite local artists’ work – creating an immersive grid of imagery for others to explore.

Clicking on a region of the national grid expanded the area – allowing the users to explore individual pieces of artwork uploaded by users from the selected area.

Each stop on the tour had at one featured artist and non-profit – both of whom made appearances to promote their work and mission. We integrated Facebook Causes into the site, giving users an opportunity to donate and track progress being made by the non-profits.

The Scion x-CHANGE mobile site offered quick access to the tour’s calendar, as well as news and updates posted from the road. Artwork displayed at events also had associated QR codes – giving attendees the ability to save and share their favorites while on-the-go.
